Black firefighters have served city since 1876 (The Indianapolis Star)

Indianapolis Mayor James Mitchell appointed W.O. “Deck” Sherwood as Indianapolis Fire Department chief in May 1876. Two weeks later, on May 19, the city’s first black firemen joined Hose Company 9: foreman Robert Braxton, James Graves, Thomas Howard and Thomas Smith.
