Children of fallen heroes may get extra points in hiring

BRIDGEPORT — Following the deaths of two city firefighters in July, the city’s Civil Service Commission is working on changing its hiring process for patrol officers and firefighters to grant extra points to children of public safety officers in the city who die in the line of duty.

Our heroes finally honored

As the final fundraising events are being planned, one on Sept. 11 at Flanagan’s Pub, 101 E. Stewart St. in Dayton, the memorial in honor of regional firefighters and paramedics who died in the line of duty is to be built soon.The $100,000 memorial is called the “Final Alarm” and is scheduled to rise in Stubbs Memorial Park in Centerville before the end of 2010.

Police gather for Dewey funeral

BROOKLYN PARK, Minn. — Law enforcement officers from hundreds of agencies gathered this morning for the funeral of Christopher L. Dewey, a Mahnomen County deputy sheriff who died Aug. 9 after being shot 18 months ago. They began to fill the Living Word Christian Center parking lot in Brooklyn Park shortly after 7 a.m., four hours before the funeral service was to begin.

UPDATED: Remembering a hero, Dewey’s family and friends reflect on deputy’s life

UPDATED 12:52 p.m. BROOKLYN PARK, Minn. – Family and friends remembered Christopher L. Dewey today as a hero. The 27-year-old Mahnomen County deputy sheriff, who was shot 18 months ago, was eulogized during his funeral as a person who was there when people needed him.
