Ohio Firefighters To Get New Bulletproof Vests

Columbus firefighters soon will get new protection while in the job. It isn’t fire gear; it’s body armor. Monday night, Columbus city council voted to purchase 300 body-armor vests for the city’s firefighters. The vests would cost around $269,000 and would replace all existing body armor currently in use. Fire officials say its recommended that body armor be replaced every five years. Some of the department’s vests are 10 years old. The vests would be kept in firehouses and medic vehicles in case they’re needed. Officials say those vests that are being replaced will be destroyed so they don’t “fall into wrong hands.“

Ryan Cellmer is recovering in the Burn Center at Via Christi Hospital on North St. Francis. His doctors say he’s recovering well, but he almost lost his life fighting an oil tank fire. The fire happened Thursday, April 1 in Rooks county near the town of Codell. Cellmer is a volunteer firefighter in Plainville. He was one of dozens of firefighters from several different towns trying to contain a large oil tank fire. They fought it late into the night. Cellmer says “I heard what sounded like a giant toilet flush, and I knew instantly what it was. It was the tank had let go.” One of the tanks had erupted. But at that point he was ok. He noticed a department pick up was close to the flames so he ju…

Ohio firefighter injured by electric power line

Berne Township firefighter is being treated in the burn unit of a Columbus hospital after he walked into a downed power line Monday. Firefighter Donnie L. Thimmes, of Lancaster, walked into a power line at the scene of a fire about 7:30 p.m. Fire Chief Dave Hammond said the 65-year-old firefighter tripped over a log and became entangled in the power lines. Thimmes is in an induced coma in the Ohio State University Medical Center, Hammond said; however, hospital officials said they have no record of Thimmes at the facility. Thimmes and other firefighters responded to a fire at 4570 Krile Road in Sugar Grove after receiving a call of a fire in the woods behind a residence. A tree had appar…

Elderly woman run over by Fire apparatus in Colorado

Investigators are surveying the evidence inside a Boulder City mobile home park after a fire truck reportedly drove over a woman there. A Boulder City spokesperson says the Boulder City Fire Dept. truck was responding to a call of a electrical pole on fire near Yucca Street and Nevada Highway around 8pm. The fire had knocked out power in the area. Officials believe the firefighter driving the truck did not see the woman walking because of the dark surroundings. Friends and neighbors of the victim identify her as 77-years-old. An eyewitness says the woman tried to stop the truck but it kept going. “She was waving and yelling, trying to get out of their way. They obviously didn’t see her or hear her. They hi…

Mayor: "Don’t blame response time on closed fire station" Deputy chief disagrees

Cutbacks in the fire department cannot be blamed for the damage done to a multi-family home on Fairmount Avenue that burned Saturday afternoon, Mayor Sue Kay said. “I believe there are so many different reasons why something burns so quickly,” she said Sunday. The house that burned Saturday afternoon is not far from the fire department’s building on Broad Street, which no longer has firefighters assigned to it. Deputy Fire Chief Joseph Davis has his office in that building, and he was there when the fire broke out. Were it still a manned station, firefighters would have had a better chance of preventing the fire from spreading, Davis said. “If I had a trained crew here with me, w…

Compartment Door Strikes Firefighter in Face Causing Injury

While responding to a collapsed roof with an Aerial Ladder I noticed one of the spring loaded side mount doors failed to latch. As I approached it to secure the latch the door swung open hitting me in the chin/lower lip area. My front incisor was broken in half and I received a 2 cm laceration on my chin that took five stitches to close. LESSONS LEARNED: When approaching side mount doors always keep your hands extended towards the door to stop any impacts if the door unexpectedly opens.
